Being engaged at work means putting forth the effort to get ourselves in the mood and commit to doing something we may not want to do right then. So here are two steps to help with your engagement:
1. Greet each day with resolve
This means taking a minute when you wake up to decide that you will be engaged and productive at work. Do it before you roll out of bed so you aren’t distracted. Tell yourself you are lucky to have this job. Remind yourself what attracted you to this organization. Reflect upon all the positives you will experience as you knock down your "to do" list and strengthen the co-worker and client relationships you have. Become excited about the possibilities you will have today.
2. Fake it until it's real
Go through the motions to do the right thing even if you don’t feel like it. Yes, those emails seem never ending, but go through them anyway. Yes, you’ve noticed an issue or concern at work, so consider courses of action and communicate them to your boss. Yes, you do need to make those phone calls, so do it. Yes, your co-worker is kind of obnoxious, but be respectful and kind anyway.
Keep working on this even if you don’t feel like doing it and before you know it, your habits have been rewired and your capacity for productivity has increased. In the meantime, don't let the actions and behaviors of others keep you away from meeting your goals. Remember, you made a decision today and you are a person of your word.
